As we reach six months since the initial UK lockdown, many are still wondering how and when the global spread of the coronavirus may subside, especially as a vaccine is still a long way from rollout ready. What about other approaches? Is there a way we could avoid constant lockdown until a vaccine is ready? Herd immunity is not a part of it…that is a scientific concept, not a goal or a strategy.
Our goal is to protect life from this virus, our strategy is to protect the most vulnerable and protect the NHS through contain, delay, research and mitigate. But what exactly is herd immunity and was it ever a possible strategy for the UK? Here is everything you need to know. When enough people in a community are vaccinated against a disease, this can make it more difficult for the disease to spread to susceptible individuals who have not yet been or cannot be vaccinated.
The Vaccine Knowledge Project at Oxford University uses the analogy of a person being infected by measles. Herd immunity can also occur naturally. But this approach for coronavirus would have required a large proportion of the population becoming ill first making it a non-starter. And, as time as gone on, there is still questions about how long-term Covid antibodies are anyway. On Tuesday 3 March, a statement released by the World Health Organisation WHO said that while many people around the world have developed immunity to seasonal flu strains, the same could not be said for the coronavirus.
However, after three months, their antibody levels dropped to less than 17 per cent. In August, scientists at Hong Kong University claimed they had discovered the first human being reinfected with Covidstating that the man had been infected twice by different versions of the coronavirus months apart.
If the research proves correct, it may mean that patients may not necessarily be immune to Covid after recovering from the virus. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies.

The rest of the 6 days we traveled were met with many awe inspiring scenery and none of could believe how gorgeous Iceland really was. On the way back to the Rekjavik, we were met with a friendly hotel staff and helped us get our rental car back to the rental company without any issues. Even the taxi driver was very friendly and conversational.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, everywhere, were simply delightful. All were helpful, competent and professional. Larus put together the perfect itinerary, including different kinds of hotels (modern, rustic, farm, historic).
This was my first trip to Iceland and I got a very broad introduction to this beautiful country. I received a good amount of information from Nordic Visitor in advance of my trip, so I was well prepared. I felt very safe and comfortable with no worries during the adventure. All of the vouchers and activities worked flawlessly. I talked to visitors who used other tour companies and they often had missed connections and invalid vouchers, so I am very grateful that Nordic Visitor is such a high quality company - I shared the contact info for Nordic Visitor and Larus, so my friends will have a better experience on their next tour.
Thanks very much to Larus and everyone at Nordic Visitor. You made this adventure fun, easy, and unforgettable!. I would highly recommend Nordic Visitor to any potential clients.
They are an extremely professional company with lots of experience that means your holiday will run smoothly. Every detail was thought through, and when I had queries, Hafdis was able to answer them or sort them out quickly. My children and I loved this holiday - we all agreed it was the best we have had, and I want to thank Nordic Visitor for making this possible. When I was researching the holiday, I looked at a number of different options with a number of different Travel Agents, but I am so glad I chose Nordic Visitor.
I will very much look forward to my next holiday with them. This is the first time I booked a trip solely based on internet research and not based on a referral from a friend or other trusted source.Learn Kannada through English - 01
I plan to leave a glowing review on Trip Advisor. Your website is terrific, by the way. Very easy to navigate and full of useful information. I'd like to thank Sigfus for his help and patience. He patiently answered many of my questions. I'd also like to thank our guide, Christine. Overall we had a fantastic holiday, helped a great deal by the good weather. We had planned for a lot of rain, but we just followed the sunshine around the country. Moving on every day or two was quite hard work but because of doing that we saw a lot of the country - which we loved.
Everyone we met was so friendly and enthusiastic, keen to talk to us and to tell us about themselves. The fact that everyone spoke perfect English took a lot of the stress out of a foreign holiday and we would both love to be back there right now. The quality of the sunshine and the air was quite exceptional, the long sunny evenings were a bonus and the lack of crowds made such a pleasant change from England.
The organisation of the holiday worked well, with trains, boats, planes and hotels all linking up well. In most cases we managed to walk from our hotels to railway stations. We appreciate all the efforts Bjarni went through to make sure that our tour was very enjoyable. We had many upgrades and I believe that Bjarni was instrumental in making those happen.
Both trips with Nordic Visitor have been beyond expectations. They will always be my first choice for traveling in the Northern Countries. It was all a great experience, though. A trip of a lifetime for us. From start to finish we found our Iceland experience was most rewarding.
Accommodation, car rental and itinerary set out by Nordic Visitor was most satisfying with room for detours to additional sites not mentioned in the itinerary. As Australians it was a memorable holiday. The maps have been great - very well prepared with and in combination with the daily itinerary we did not miss one thing on the way. Overall great service and amazing experience in Iceland. Intentionally we did not book the cheapest tour, but we have been surprised by the above standard for accommodation and customer service.
The tour started on a very positive note since the early booking process. Alexandra did her best and answered all of our questions and also gave her insight based on what we were looking. The island itself is breath-taking as long as you can stand the climate changes (which shift often :) Looking back I do not regret going to Iceland.
Our trip to Iceland was flawlessly planned by Nordic Visitor. There was no guess work on our part upon arrival. Everything was arranged as requested and there was plenty of free time to explore the various sections of the country.
Coronavirus: What is herd immunity and could it work in the UK?
The maps and other written materials provided were very helpful. Accomodation was excellent, friendly and in good locations. This was a great vacation. The service from Nordic Visitor excellent. The emergency updates regarding potential disruption due to volcanic activity were very much appreciated and demonstrated excellent customer service.
I'm still in awe of how helpful Hafdis was before, during, and after our trip and everything about the tour from the moment we got picked up to our last stop at the Blue Lagoon. Thank you for making our first trip to Iceland one of hopefully many more. Our trip was well-planned and we had all the information we needed to make it hassle free from the different connections throughout the countries we traveled.Etv varthalu heroes jagan
